BoardGameFYI is a free board game encyclopedia with data on over 10,000 games. You can explore game mechanics, designers, publishers, player count recommendations, complexity ratings, and more — all sourced from BoardGameGeek and Wikidata.
Complexity ratings on BoardGameFYI use the BoardGameGeek (BGG) weight system, which ranges from 1.0 (very simple) to 5.0 (extremely complex). These scores come from community votes on BGG. We classify games into five tiers: Light (1.0-1.99), Medium Light (2.0-2.49), Medium (2.5-3.49), Medium Heavy (3.5-3.99), and Heavy (4.0-5.0).
Board game mechanics (or mechanisms) are the core rules and systems that drive gameplay. Common examples include Deck Building (constructing a personal deck during play), Worker Placement (assigning tokens to action spaces), Area Control (competing for territory), and Hand Management (optimizing card usage). Most games combine 3-5 mechanics to create their unique gameplay experience.
Start by considering your group's player count, preferred complexity level, and available time. Use our player count filter to find games rated 'Best' at your exact player count. Then filter by weight — Light games (under 2.0) for casual groups, Medium (2.5-3.5) for regular gamers, and Heavy (4.0+) for experienced players. Our Game DNA system also helps match games by strategy depth, interaction level, and replayability.
A standalone game includes everything needed to play out of the box. An expansion requires the base game and adds new content — such as additional maps, characters, cards, or mechanics — to extend replayability. Some expansions are 'standalone expansions' that can be played without the base game but also integrate with it.
