Drafting is a mechanism where players select cards, tiles, or other items from a shared pool or by passing hands of cards around the table. Each player picks one item then passes the rest, creating an evolving selection. This mechanism adds meaningful choice and some knowledge of what opponents are collecting.
In card drafting (as in 7 Wonders), players simultaneously pick from hands of cards that rotate around the table. In open drafting (as in Azul), items are visible in a common pool and players take turns selecting. Card drafting is simultaneous; open drafting is sequential.
Great drafting games include 7 Wonders (civilization card drafting), Azul (tile drafting for mosaic building), Sushi Go! (lightweight card drafting), Blood Rage (draft then place Vikings), and Terraforming Mars (drafting project cards to colonize Mars).
